Passing of Life Member Marc McDermott
It is with great sadness that the Officers and members of the Glenn Dale Fire Association announce the passing of Life Member Marc ”Mac” McDermott. Marc passed away peacefully this morning at his home surrounded by his family. Marc joined the Glenn Dale Fire Association in October of 1971 at the age of 16, following in his father’s footsteps who was a member of the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department. Marc was an active Life Member with over 50 years of service to Glenn Dale and would still come up to the station on a regular basis until he became ill. Mac, keep going to them big fires on the big tower baby! You will be missed! RIP Big Mac!
Marc was born in Washington, DC to Robert “Scotty” McDermott and Ina Marie (Adams) McDermott.
Marc served his community as a volunteer firefighter at Glenn Dale Station 18 and Seat Pleasant Station 8. As a young boy, he worked side by side with his dad at Kentland Station 33, scrubbing floors, racking hoses, and cleaning and polishing equipment while learning the ropes from the experts at Kentland Station 33. Recently, Marc was just awarded his 50-year pin as a volunteer firefighter. Constantly striving for excellence and more knowledge Marc achieved the National Ranking, Fire Officer 1. He is a Life Member at Glenn Dale Station 18 and served as the Property Officer for a number of years. Being a firefighter and helping others was his passion.
Marc graduated DuVal High School class of ‘74 and continued on to PG Community College class of ’78 with his associate degree in Fire Science Technology. This opened doors at Giant Food, working his way up from Fire Extinguisher Technician to Supervisor, Safety Construction. After more than 30 years Marc retired due to health concerns.
Marc received his first gift of life in May of 1999, a kidney-pancreas transplant. His second kidney-pancreas transplant was received in 2015. Both were done at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.
Marc was a Mason. He was a member of Collington Lodge 230, St. Florien Lodge 911, and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry 32nd Degree.
